Congratulations, you’ve made a decision to lose weight and get healthy! Now the complicated process of deciding how you’re going to lose weight and who to listen to begins.
With obesity rates among adults in the United States over 35% and the numbers getting worse every single year, what we have been doing is obviously not working. We have been told that in order to lose weight, all you have to do is move more and eat less. We have more gyms, Weight loss programs, protein bars, shakes, potions, and even lasers than ever before and yet our waistlines continue to expand here in the United States. Albert Einstein said that his definition of insanity was “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. There has to be a portion of truth to that statement in the weight loss industry because we seem to be doing the same “diets” and “workouts”, slightly repackaged, over and over again and expecting them to work the next time that we do them only to find ourselves back to our original weight or worse yet, a couple of pounds heavier than where we started.
If that’s you, you are not alone. In fact, according to the CDC, 49% of the US adult population (56.4% of women, versus 41.7% of men) is on a “diet” at any given time. If so many of US adults are on a diet then why are the numbers of obese people growing every year? What if I told you that many of our ideas on dieting and losing weight were flawed to begin with? Let’s take a look at some of my recommendations for how to choose a weight loss program that will not only help you lose weight but also keep it off!
Nothing will derail progress on a weight-loss program faster than not getting results. I have seen people on other weight loss programs stay very motivated and work hard to lose a pound or two a month. For many people, those types of results can be very discouraging especially if they are standing on the scale every single day. What you want to look for is a weight loss program that will help you to lose 2 to 3 pounds per week. That much weight loss is not slow enough to leave you feeling discouraged but also not so fast that you have to starve yourself in order to get your results. Science shows that a crash diet, where one is starving themselves with less than 600 calories a day, will lead to rapid weight loss but may damage the metabolism of the dieter and lead them to gain weight after they go off of the diet.
When trying to lose weight, many dieters can feel like they are on a journey all alone. They may not be supported by their family or friends in their endeavor. This can lead to emotional resentment and in many cases cause a person trying to lose weight to abandon their weight loss efforts. Having a personal coach that you can call or go meet with can make a huge difference in how much a dieter will lose on their weight loss journey. A weight loss coach should not just be someone that is a listening ear, they should also know how to motivate their client to not only stay on track but also help them adopt lifestyle habits that will help them keep the weight off after they have reached their weight loss goals.
We have all seen people lose weight only to gain it back quickly in the upcoming months. A good weight loss program will stay by your side and help you learn new lifestyle habits to maintain your weight loss. Harvard Medical and Beth Israel Medical Center state that if you can stay at your new weight for six months or longer, it will become your new weight set point. For many clients, the average day is not a problem, but they fall off track after a holiday where they ate food that might be considered a celebration meal. Many times, that celebration meal will turn into a celebration week or even a celebration month. Being off track for that long can lead to weight gain and frustration. A good lifestyle program will help you plan for celebration meals but also help you get back on track so that weight gain and frustration don’t creep up on you.
We at a Custom Health Centers believe that every person is an individual that has individual needs during a weight loss journey. From individualized coaching to all-natural supplements that help address nutritional needs, we customize a weight loss solution that is unique to each individual. If a weight loss program is the same for every single person, you might lose some short-term weight but it’s unlikely that the results will be sustainable.
There are incredible amounts of different supplements and protein powders on the market that hold themselves up as Weight loss aids. Many of these supplements include artificial and synthetic ingredients, colors, additives and sweeteners. Artificial and synthetic ingredients can mess with your hormones, increase food cravings and have been shown in studies to be unhealthy with some reportedly having dangerous side effects. Make sure that your weight loss program only has natural ingredients.
Track Record of Success
Most of these programs and pills are no longer on the market because they didn’t work, or in some cases they were downright dangerous! Make sure that the program that you are looking into has stood the test of time and helped a lot of people before you waste any time or money on something that does not work or is dangerous.
